I created this section for colleagues and friends who are undergoing career changes and job searches.

Recently, over the past year or so, I have been called by friends, ex-colleagues, and people out of the blue asking for help and assistance in their quest for a new position, a.k.a "job search."

The world of business is undergoing huge shifts. What was once considered a steady and growing market, can quickly become a commodity, as new entrants from around the world position themselves as the lower cost alternative.

Unfortunately, the same holds true for employees. There is always someone who is willing to do your job for less.  And there is always someone in management, who believes the cheaper, less expensive person can do it for less.

Then there are the companies who promise a stated direction, hire you and a year or two later, you find yourself in a company who has a new stated direction.  And that new direction does not include you.

This can mean an unexpected upheaval.  I know. I've been there.

To that end, this section is designed to help you or someone your know, find the right position, with the right company, with the right manager.

I have included what I consider the best reports, information, and practical advice I can provide.

I have headed up turn-around situations where I was brought in to create a new revenue stream, or rehabilitate a dying business unit.  And in all these cases I've been in over the past five or six years, I have found it comes down to five things: Management; Strategy and Direction; Products and Solutions; Support Processes and PEOPLE.

None of this works without PEOPLE.

If you lost your position, or politics is eating you alive, this is your chance to reinvent yourself. And a chance to get on with a strategic change in your business life.

Good Luck!

PS - Oh yes. One last thing. I ask only this; when you get back on your feet, return the favor and help someone who comes to you.  You will get back to where you belong. And when you do, someone will be asking for your help. Help them. What goes around comes around - whether good or bad.

You should become familiar with some of the web-based networking tools. One person I referred to Linked-in received a call from a recruiter and has has two very successful interviews - all from having his name out there

This is a great place to build your network.

Another tool is Zoom Info. This tool allows you to look up someone you are meeting with, whether it is for a job interview or other important meeting.  See my profile in Zoom Info. If it has me, think of someone important and the information you can glean.

A friend of mine said this site was a great place to network.  I can tell you that the email I recieved from ExecuNet was enlightening (Click here for a PDF version of the email). I like the founder's personalized story told in this email.  Click on the link below to access ExecuNet.  ExecuNet Link

Career Builders is a good tool as well. It provides information about positions that are open in your field, where you live. It provides a list of positions each week to delivered to your email. Link by clicking on the logo below

Of course - it is always best that you network with past colleagues, friends, ex-employers, clients, etc. when looking to make a job cjange. The worst time to start the network is when you need it. But, it is never too late. It is your network that will help you out more so than anything else.

Last, if you are not looking, this is the best time to network. Become an expert networker.
Always be willing to do someone else a favor.   Doing others a favor is probably the best way to network. Read how to network by reading the book, Never Eat Alone.

This book by John Lucht is one of the best. It is an easy read, fun, and provides DEEP insight as to career recruiters work. It provides ideas and strategies on how to build your resume, get in front of prospective employers and the best time to look for a new job (hint: when you have a job).

A great book below is by Danial Pink. He discusses the change in the economy specifically around consulting and becoming a independent contractor and "free agent."  A good read.

Another good book on consulting and being a free agent is this book. It chronicals the life lessons of a Harriet Ruben a one time big shot publisher who became fed up with corporate world and had the courage and audacity to tell her management they were full of it. Who hasn't wanted to tell some one this? She did. She survived and thrived. But not without ups and downs. She is extremely honest and it that sense, virtuous.
